Job Description

Our client, a contemporary fashion & accessories brand, is hiring a Design Director to join their team in NYC on a hybrid schedule (4 days in office). This is an exciting opportunity for a creative and experienced handbag designer and requires experience working with leather goods.

Job Duties Include:

• Translate brand aesthetic into innovative and trend-forward designs
• Collaborate to define seasonal themes and creative direction
• Oversee the design and development of handbag collections
• Partner to source and select seasonal materials, including leather and trims
• Manage the end-to-end design process, including market research, sketching, product functionality, etc.
• Utilize both hand sketching and digital sketch software to develop designs
• Research market trends, emerging materials, and innovative techniques to inform strategy
• Provide recommendations on seasonal themes, line edits, new product concepts, etc.
• Work with licensors, managing complex relationships to ensure successful collaborations
• Manage packaging design and development
• Partner to ensure design consistency across categories
• Oversee the technical design process, ensuring a smooth transition from concept to production
• Own leather selection and material specifications
• Develop and lead a design team

Job Qualifications Include:

• 10+ years of handbag design experience
• Formal design education/training
• Expert-level design and conceptual skills specific to handbags
• Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
• Strong ability to multi-task and manage competing deadlines
• Ability to inspire new ideas and design concepts
• Excellent organizational, time management, communication, and presentation skills
• In-depth knowledge of silhouettes, fabrications, colorways, construction techniques, leather, and trim
• Strong leadership and team management skills.

Salary: $150k - $155k annually based on experience
